Travel notes of the day
Today calls for some fun followed by a trip back in time!
The Sigiriya rock plateau was formed from the magma of a volcano. It is also called 'Lion rock' as the main entrance had been designed in the form of a huge lion. Only its feet remain now. The fortress complex has a triple moated defence around it, and sits atop a 500 m high rock. The complex includes the ruins of a palace, gardens, canals, and even a pool! The Western wall of Sigiriya has been painted with frescoes of women, works of Secular Sinhala painting during the reign of King Kashyapa. Today, it has been listed by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
After an early breakfast, we head out to enjoy a lovely hot air balloon ride. Take in the stunning views from up above.
We then visit the magnificent Sigiriya Rock Fortress, an ancient fort and palace complex popularly called the Eighth Wonder of the World by the locals.
Our last activity for the day is a jeep safari at Minneriya National Park.
