Trek through seven alpine lakes in deep Himalayas-Vishansar Lake , Krishansar lake ,Gadsar Lake , Harmukh peak , Gangabal Twin Lakes .

An epic trek whose trails take you into a truly enchanted world of high altitude himalayan alpine lakes situated at the foothill of various snow clad mountains. On this 7 day trek we will pass through himalayan forests ,rolling meadows and witness out of this world landscapes.The trek is laden with expansive alpine pastures offering gorgeous views of some of the highest snow-covered mountain peaks and open valleys.

Steep mountain passes, and altitudes approaching 4200m demand a sure-foot and a good physical and mental fitness.

Highest Altitude : 4180 Mts at Gadsar Pass | Trek distance: 68 Kms|Srinagar to Srinagar

The Great lakes trek kashmir is a moderate panoramic trek. It is living in a three dimensional himalayan world. Every day is a treat fo rthe senses ( no exaggeration here) Every valley and every lake is a picture postcard and will make you wonder why haven't you done this trail earlier. Rolling meadows, snow capped mountains, azure blue alpine lakes and unseen landscapes await you on this trail. What to Expect :

  • Trek: up to 7km per day.
  • Daily activity: up to 5 hours’ trekking per day.
  • Carry: up to 5kg in a day-sack.
  • Terrain: remote, uneven, snowy, icy, rocky, sometimes exposed terrain at up to 4200m.
  • Climate: Can be sunny in valleys and cold and windy at high altitudes. June and September months are cooler than those of July and August. Averages are 3000m, 1°C to 20°C.
  • Swim: not required though there will be stream crossings to make.

1 Welcome to Kashmir

Welcome to heaven on earth! Prepared to be mesmerised by the sheer , unflinching beauty of this landscape. We travel to Sonmarg ( our base ) for this trail. we will reach sonmarg in approximately 3 hours. We will make camp by the Sind river at 2610 Mtrs or 8,560 Ft.

Todays trail is mix of ascends and descends passing gorgeous rolling meadows. After these ascends we enter a pine/birch forest . After 3 hrs on this trail we arrive at Shokdari top. Enjoy bird's eye view of the Thajawas glacier and the beautiful Sonmarg town. After lunch at Shokadari top we continue on this trail, the trail turns into steep descends as we enter the massive Nichnai meadow. From here we will trek for an hour to reach our camp at Nichnai , a hot cup of Qahwa awaits our arrival.

Make sure you have a hearty breakfast for the extra dose of stamina. Todays trail will put your lungs and legs to test. We start our ascend to one of the three passes, the pass we will be ascending is the Nichnai Pass at 4080 mts. We start our ascend after crossing a icy stream while leaving the vast Nichnai meadow behind. We will pass through high altitude grazing pastures of goats and sheep, this is a hours hike which seems never ending. After crossing the pass we enter into the Vishanasar valley known for its various medicinal plants. Once we enter Vishnasar valley we break for a lunch before resuming our trek to vishansar lake. Our camp site is 10 minutes away from the lake.

We leave our camp while admiring the Vishnasar lake . As we start our ascend and leave the Vishnasar behind to meet its cousin Krishnasar Lake which lies over a ridge not far from its cousin. We start our ascend towards its eastern shore also entering the highest pass on this trek - the Gadsar at 4180 mts. This ascend is steeper than Nichnai. We will take an average time of 2 hours depending on the pace to ascend this pass. Once we reach the top we get a birds eye view of the vishnasar valley situated between the twin lakes of Vishnasar and Krishnasar which are also source of Neelam river. From the top we descend into the Gadsar valley and have lunch before moving on to our camp at Kostour Kot. The Gadsar valley is a canopy of lush green mountains , rolling meadows and alpine flora. We check in to our camp at Kostour Kot.

Today is the shortest day of the trek ! Happy Much! The trail is relatively easy with flat paths. On leaving Gadsar pass we ascend our way to the meadow of Rasbal. The trail leads us to the fertile meadow of Rasbal and through 7 small lakes of Satsar. We will find icy rivers give us a peak and disappear underground through the boulders. We continue our trek and camp at Megandoab at the foothills of the third pass of Zajibal

A divine experience awaits us today. We come face to face with mount Haramukh at 5300 mts. The sight is to be seen to be believed, but lets first get there ! We start todays trail by criss -crossing boulders and gradually ascending to the third and final pass on this trek. The Zajibal pass at 4080 mts. It takes approx. 3 hours of alpine trekking to to reach the top of Zajibal pass. Once at the top we can view mount Haramukh in its glory towering at 5300 mts right in front of us , at its foothill lie the twin lakes of Gangabal and Nundkol. One can also view the distant Kolesar lake. We descend the pass to make camp at Gangabal lake. We indulge in Lunch at the lake and soak in the divine atmosphere.

We exit these hidden valleys today and return to the urban jungle! Our trail from Gangabal is an easy one. Mostly descends and flats as we pass through the meadows of Trunkhol. We continue the descend and enter the tree line at Naranag village passing through pine forests of Bodpathri. Once we cross the pine forest we take lunch and start the drive back to srinagar. It takes approximately 2-3 hours to reach srinagar.
