- Galle is a quaint, fortified coastal town with a fascinating history. You can walk along its ramparts, once constructed by the Dutch East India Company. The Galle Fort has been deemed a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO under criteria iv, that is, for its unique exposition of "an urban ensemble which illustrates the interaction of European architecture and South Asian traditions from the 16th to the 19th centuries."
Be sure to try the famous 'kottu roti' (a Sri Lankan delicacy) at the fort!
Today, bid adieu to Bentota as we head to Yala via the town of Galle.
We make a pit stop in Galle. The historic city of Galle, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This city was built by the Portuguese and fortified by the Dutch and is a great example of the fusion of European styles and South Asian influences.
- Galle Fort - We visit the mighty Galle Fort, a historical, archaeological and architectural heritage monument, which even after standing for over 400 years, maintains its grandiosity thanks to the extensive reconstruction work done by Archaeological Department of Sri Lanka.
From here, we head on to our destination, Yala.

Nuwara Eliya means "city on the plain (table land)" or "city of light". The city is the administrative capital of Nuwara Eliya District with a picturesque landscape and temperate climate. It is at an altitude of 1,868 m (6,128 ft) and is considered to be the most important location for Pidirutalagala, the tallest mountain in Sri Lanka. Nuwara Eliya is known for its temperate, cool climate – tea production. The city is overlooked by the coolest area in Sri Lanka.
After breakfast at the hotel, we take a scenic drive through winding roads to Nuwara Eliya, or the 'Little England' of Sri Lanka.
Nestled amidst tea plantation and misty hillocks and British-style cottages and Queen Anne style mansions dot this picturesque hill station. It is believed to be one of the coldest places on the island, however, its weather closely resembles that of a spring day in England.

Travel notes of the day
This hill capital is the venue of the Esala Perahera, an annual procession during which the holy relic housing Lord Buddha's tooth is paraded atop an elephant. It was the last stronghold of the Sinhala Kings and was finally conceded to the British in 1815. Temples shrines and monasteries keep alive Buddhist traditions in this holy city. Legend has it that the tooth was brought to Sri Lanka hidden in an Orissan princess' hair to protect it from sacrilegious hands.
We leave for Kandy post breakfast for some sightseeing.
One of the most important sites we visit is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. This historical site holds a tooth of the revered Buddha in a gold casket. Witness the pujas don at the temple as devotees bring beautiful flowers as offerings.
We stay the night in Kandy.

It houses over a hundred and fifty statues of Buddha as well as a few statues of Hindu gods like Vishnu and Ganesha. The walls and the ceilings of the caves have been painted with beautiful Buddhist murals. This complex is a wonder for it appears that monks have carved the caves out of rock and is the larges and best-preserved cave temple complex in all of Sri Lanka.
After breakfast, we head to Habarana, a small town in the district of Anuradhapura.
Today's activities include a visit to a spice garden and the Dambulla Cave Temple, a series of five rock temples. It is believed that images of the Buddha were first created here some 2000 years ago.

Travel notes of the day
Anuradhapura served as the capital of mighty Ceylon from the 5th century BC until the 10th century AD when it fell into disrepair as it was invaded and plundered. Three of the most remarkable dagobas it hold are 'Ruvanveliseya', dating back to the 2nd Century B.C, ' Jetawanarama', and the 'Thuparama' dagobas. The city’s most renowned relic is the sacred Bodhi Tree, which is believed to have grown from the southern branch of the Maha Bodhi tree under which the Buddha attained Nirvana. It was planted some 2250 years ago.
Today, we set out on an excursion to Anuradhapura, another World Heritage site as declared by UNESCO.
The city’s greatest treasures are its hemispherical 'dagobas' or brick stupas and temple ruins some of which still remain in use.
After a day spent walking down history lane, we drive back to Habarana where we stay another night.

- The Sigiriya rock plateau was formed from the magma of a volcano. It is also called 'Lion rock' as the main entrance had been designed in the form of a huge lion. Only its feet remain now. The fortress complex has a triple moated defence around it, and sits atop a 500 m high rock. The complex includes the ruins of a palace, gardens, canals, and even a pool! The Western wall of Sigiriya has been painted with frescoes of women, works of Secular Sinhala painting during the reign of King Kashyapa.
