Travel notes of the day
The Reis Magos Fort and the Aguada Fort are the splendid remnants of the Portuguese era in Goa.
The Reis Magos Fort, one of the oldest in Goa, has served as a fortress as a first line of defence., a jail, as well as a hospital! It is a mix of Hindu and Portuguese styles of architecture. Built in 1551, it lies on the banks of the Mandovi river and overlooks the city of Panjim.
The Aguada fort, which overlooks the Arabian sea, is one of the best examples of Portuguese military style architecture, and was used by the Portuguese to fend off enemies.
Welcome to Goa!
A representative will pick you up from the airport/railway station/ bus stand and will escort you to your hotel. Today is all about beaches and forts.
After some shut-eye at the hotel, we visit the charming Reis Magos Fort and Aguada Fort and catch some panoramic views of the gorgeous Arabian sea. We then head out to Calangute beach and Baga beach for some surf and sand.
- North Goa
Travel notes of the day
Old Goa, or 'Velha Goa' was actually founded by the Sultanate of Bijapur but was later taken over by the Portuguese. It is now, a small town of sorts with European-influenced architecture, with a bunch of churches, cathedrals, museums and other historical sites, and is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Fontainhas, or Goa's 'Latin quarter' is a section of Panjim, Goa's capital, that has cobbled streets dotted with Portuguese style houses in bright colours and brightly painted walls.
Today calls for a tour of the charming Old Goa. After some breakfast, we set out to visit Old Goa's beautiful churches and cathedrals - the Basilica of Bom Jesus, Se Cathedral, St. Cajetan. Next, we go on a tour of Spice Plantation for a walk amidst nature and to get some first hand insight into how spices are cultivated. Here, enjoy a traditional, banana leaf meal under the skies.
After a hearty lunch, we head to Panjim for some sightseeing. Discover the city, and explore the colourful Fontainhas, or the old quarters - the only Portuguese quarter in all of Asia. You have the chance to look around and shop here.
Our last event for the day is an hour's sunset cruise on the Mandovi river to catch the sunset and some fresh, evening breeze.

Travel notes of the day
- You can rent a scooter and cruise through the streets of Goa. This is the most preferred (and one of the cheapest!) ways to navigate from one place to the other. Make sure to haggle for the prices. It can range from Rs. 200-500 (higher even, if its holiday season).
- Use this opportunity to explore Goa's much-acclaimed, vibrant nightlife. Entry into many of Goa's clubs is free for the ladies, so maybe some club-hopping is in the offing!
- Explore Goa's many beaches. Besides the ones that are frequented, the hidden, less-visited ones are true gems.
- Stroll through the local markets which sell clothes, jewellery, food, spices and more. The Saturday night market at Arpora is a fun place with live music, stalls and food from around the world.
After a good breakfast at the hotel, you have the whole day to explore Goa at your leisure.
