Travel notes of the day
Ho Chi Minh city is an interesting blend of the traditional and the modern, with colonial-style architecture, traditional structures, as well as high-rise buildings. It is a bustling city with a rich history and culture.
- The Reunification Palace marks the place where the Vietnam War ended on the 30th of April 1975, when a North Vietnamese tank crashed through its front gate.
- As the name suggests, the War Remnants museum houses remnants -photographs, weapons- of the American War in Vietnam as well as others such as altercations with France and China.
- The Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon is one of the best examples of French architecture in Vietnam, with most of the material used being brought over from France. It appears to be modeled after its counterpart in Paris.
- The Saigon Central Post office is the largest post office in the country and is another remnant of the bygone French colonial era in Vietnam. Send a postcard to a loved one (or yourself) from here!
A quick history lesson -
The Cu Chi Tunnels were constructed in the late 1940s by the Viet Minh to counter the French forces and put an end to colonial rule in Vietnam. These tunnels, however, were prominently used during the Vietnam War by the Viet Cong after some repairs and extensions. They were used to house troops, transport supplies and gear, bomb shelters to escape from the aerial bombing of the US forces, as hospitals and even store areas and living quarters. Booby traps were laid out for enemies. These tunnels were strategically used for guerrilla warfare against the USA.
Today, post breakfast, we set out to discover bits of Ho Chi Minh City itself as we visit The Reunification Palace, War Remnants Museum, the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Saigon Central Post Office, and the Jade Emperor Pagoda.
We stop for lunch at a famous Pho restaurant!
After lunch, we set off on a drive through the countryside to visit the Ben Dinh section of the well-known Cu Chi Tunnel System, an underground tunnel system, built in the 1940s by communist forces in Vietnam. On arrival, we watch a video explaining how these tunnels were used during the times of war with America. Walk through passages, crawl through narrower ones at get a glimpse of how they were once used during the times of war. You'll find displayed, booby traps, ammunition, weapons once used during the war.
There is a shooting range where you can try your hand at firing automatic or semi-automatic weapons (self sponsored).
After an informative day, we head back into the city to stay the night.
