Travel notes of the day
Xin chào! Welcome to Vietnam.
Ho Chi Minh city is an interesting blend of the traditional and the modern, with colonial-style architecture, traditional structures, as well as high-rise buildings. It is a bustling city with a rich history and culture.
- The Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon is one of the best examples of French architecture in Vietnam, with most of the material used being brought over from France. It appears to be modeled after its counterpart in Paris.
- The Saigon Central Post office is the largest post office in the country and is another remnant of the bygone French colonial era in Vietnam. Send a postcard to a loved one (or yourself) from here!
- The name Dong Khoi means 'Total Revolution'. Once an important cultural centre during the French colonial rule, this street is one of the most happening areas of the city and is the best place to visit to get a glimpse of colonial architecture and the glamorous parts of town.
A local guide awaits your arrival at the airport and will drive you to your hotel to get settled in. After you rest a while and filly your tummies, we set off for a tour of the city.
We look to discover bits of Ho Chi Minh City itself as we visit the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Saigon Central Post Office, Dong Khoi street, the Mariamma Hindu temple and the Ben Thanh market.
After the day's sightseeing, we head back to the hotel for the night.
- Tan Son Nhat International Airport

Today calls for a visit to the Mekong Delta, also known as the 'Rice Bowl of Vietnam'. Houses on stilts line the riverside, and lovely floating markets sell an array of good from flowers and fruits to fresh seafood. Post breakfast, we head to the city of My Tho where we board a motor boat for a cruise along the vast network of river channels of the Mekong with views of for famous islets - Dragon, Unicorn, Turtle and Phoenix.
A glimpse of the day-
- We stop at one of the floating fish houses to discover their fresh seafood and way of life
- We visit traditional honey farming and coconut candy making workshops for some insight and hands-on experience while the trills of local traditional music permeates the air.
- Next, we hand-row a 'sampan', a type of wooden boat through local floating markets and ride through villages on the back of a Xe Loi, a kind of local cycle rickshaw.
- After a lovely lunch at a local restaurant, we board a boat back to My Tho.
- Before we return to the hotel in Ho Cho Minh city, we visit the Vinh Trang Pagoda, a majestic temple surrounded by beautiful gardens, a sight for sore eyes.

Travel notes of the day
The Cu Chi Tunnels were constructed in the late 1940s by the Viet Minh to counter the French forces and put an end to colonial rule in Vietnam. These tunnels, however, were prominently used during the Vietnam War by the Viet Cong after some repairs and extensions. They were used to house troops, transport supplies and gear, bomb shelters to escape from the aerial bombing of the US forces, as hospitals and even store areas and living quarters. Booby traps were laid out for enemies. These tunnels were strategically used for guerilla warfare against the USA.
Today, after some breakfast, we set off on a drive through the countryside to visit the well-known Cu Chi Tunnel System, an underground tunnel system, built in the 1940s by communist forces in Vietnam. On arrival, we watch a video explaining how these tunnels were used during the times of war with America. Walk through passages, crawl through narrower ones and get a glimpse of how they were once used during the times of war. You'll find displayed, booby traps, ammunition, weapons once used during the war.
There is a shooting range where you can try your hand at firing automatic or semi-automatic weapons (self sponsored).
After an informative day, we head back into the city for the night. .
