Today calls for a history lesson!
The Cu Chi Tunnels were constructed in the late 1940s by the Viet Minh to counter the French forces and put an end to colonial rule in Vietnam. These tunnels, however, were prominently used during the Vietnam War by the Viet Cong after some repairs and extensions. They were used to house troops, transport supplies and gear, bomb shelters to escape from the aerial bombing of the US forces, as hospitals and even store areas and living quarters. Booby traps were laid out for enemies. These tunnels were strategically used for guerrilla warfare against the USA.
Today, after some breakfast, we set off on a drive through the countryside to visit the well-known Cu Chi Tunnel System, an underground tunnel system, built in the 1940s by communist forces in Vietnam. Walk through passages, crawl through narrower ones at get a glimpse of how they were once used during the times of war. You'll find displayed, booby traps, ammunition, weapons once used during the war.
There is a shooting range where you can try your hand at firing automatic or semi-automatic weapons (self sponsored).
After an informative day, we head back into the city to stay the night.

Travel notes of the day
Pack your bags, because after a short tour of Ho Chi Minh city, we fly to Danang.
Ho Chi Minh city is an interesting blend of the traditional and the modern, with colonial-style architecture, traditional structures, as well as high-rise buildings. It is a bustling city with a rich history and culture.
- The Reunification Palace marks the place where the Vietnam War ended on the 30th of April 1975, when a North Vietnamese tank crashed through its front gate.
- As the name suggests, the War Remnants museum houses remnants -photographs, weapons- of the American War in Vietnam as well as others such as altercations with France and China.
- The Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon is one of the best examples of French architecture in Vietnam, with most of the material used being brought over from France. It appears to be modeled after its counterpart in Paris.
- The Saigon Central Post office is the largest post office in the country and is another remnant of the bygone French colonial era in Vietnam. Send a postcard to a loved one (or yourself) from here!
Today, we look to discover bits of Ho Chi Minh City itself as we visit The Reunification Palace, War Remnants Museum, the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Saigon Central Post Office, the Jade Emperor Pagoda and the Ben Thanh market.
A private car will then drop you off at the Ho Chi Minh airport for a flight to Danang. On arrival, you will be picked up by our local guide and transferred to your hotel.

There is a variety of food here to choose from. Sit waterside by the Hoai river with a bowl of cau lao (a local noodle dish) and a glass of bia hơi (a local brew) and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere.

Our next stop is the Marble Mountains, a collection of five limestone, marble hills. We explore the Tang Chon Cave that the hills hold within them, after which we head to the Non Nuoc Stone Carving Village at the foot of the mountains. This craft village where villagers and artisans engage in stone carving. You can buy some beautiful, traditional souvenirs here.
Our final stop for the day is the ancient city of Hoi An. Stroll through the charming, cobbled streets of the town and explore the Chinese and Japanese style houses and the iconic wooden Japanese Covered Bridge. Wander through town and discover for yourself why this city has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit lantern street and the Nguyen Hoang Night market for some shopping. Today we take a quick trip back in time for a history lesson.
The My Son Sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a collection of the ruins of ancient red-brick Hindu temples of the Champa dynasty, built between the 4th and the 14th centuries. It was also the burial site for royals and heroes.
The complex was bombed during the Vietnam war, leaving it in ruins. Bomb craters and bullet holes serve as reminders of this.
After an early breakfast, we leave for the My Son Sanctuary by bus (a group tour). My Son is a Champa temple complex. Walk around the complex with your guide as you explore the ruins and remnants of the Champa civilisation.
After a couple of hours here, we drive to the Cau Lau boat station where we board a motor boat for a visit to the Kim Bong Carpentry village, famous for its woodwork, shipbuilding and wooden carvings, where you can visit workshops and watch the carpenters in action.
Have a light lunch aboard.
We dock at Hoi An by 2:30 pm. The rest of the day is all yours.
